Liberty Island
It was about 1998, a cold winter day, and I was travelling to New York with my wife and first child. It was the first time we had gone to New York together. We took the photo from Liberty Island.
That day we had visited Ellis Island which is important to me because my grandparents landed there when they immigrated from Italy. I was in the middle of my medical training and the trip was a rare day outside of the hospital. My friend Peter Gelinas worked for Cantor Fitzgerald, and he died when the towers were destroyed. On a subsequent 11 SEP I was serving in the Middle East with the military so Peter and the attack were on my mind. It makes me sad to look at this photo. Just like the towers are gone, it seems like the person in the photo is gone. But the truth is I’m still here, and I remember.
